Due to this motherboard being considered a bit of a “classic” in regards to mining, it is calibrated to use a wider variety of components than perhaps some of the newer models.

For instance, many of the newer mining motherboards require DDR4 or even DDR5 RAM in order to run their maximum capacity number of GPUs. While that RAM may be better quality, it is also significantly more expensive than the more common DDR3 RAM which the ASRock H81 can use.

On the downside, if you plan on using the Windows OS even Windows 10 you will be a bit more limited in the number of cards you can run and the entire rig will not be as stable as if you ran ethOS or Linux.

The Biostar TB85 is a bit of an oddball on our list due in large part because it seems as though Biostar intended to try and use a single board to capture multiple markets. While this does not necessarily make it a bad motherboard for mining cryptocurrency, it definitely means that it is a bit less specialized than some of the other motherboards that we reviewed.

On top of that, there are a number of features that Biostar advertises on this board that you are unlikely to make use of if you are using it exclusively for mining cryptocurrency.

Biostar TB85 does have the distinction of being quite capable of both running a decent beginner’s mining rig as well as being able to host a modest server.

While Biostar might offer less expensive options for mining Bitcoin, this is by far their flagship offering in the arena, and it shows.

Aside from the fact that the BIOS of this motherboard was tuned for running GPUs that were mining BTC, it was also made with the intention of working equally effective with any operating system though it is notably easier to use with Linux or Windows as opposed to one of the open source mining operating systems.

Windows 10 Ready

The Biostar TB250 is tied for the second most number of GPUs that it can support at 8.

However, it actually does this for a couple reasons. As mentioned before, this motherboard can work better with Windows than some of the others we reviewed. Windows 10 can often leave some miners a bit frustrated by the fact that it can only support 8 GPUs of a single kind. This means that those people who have motherboards which can handle 12 GPUs or more ultimately have to split up the type of GPU they use.

X8 GPU

Since the motherboard is designed to manage 8 GPUs, you can simply plug-and-play without too much fuss.

This motherboard does support the option to expand its GPU support up to 12 though you will need to be fairly experienced with BIOS to be able to accomplish this feat. Moreover, you will not be able to do this by the simple plug-and-play method and will instead have to convert a couple other ports to run PCI-E data streams.

Finally, you will also have to run two different types of GPUs if you expand.

This latter option is not really advised as one of the more frustrating parts about the Biostar TB250 is its lack of solid online documentation.

If you use the motherboard as it was intended, you will not have any issue. You will have to go into BIOS to specifically select its mining mode, but it is not a difficult process.

On the other hand, if you want to expand the GPU management beyond the intended 8, you will need to know how to alter the BIOS in a far more complex and refined manner.

One potential issue with the Biostar TB250 is that it will require a bit more of an initial upfront investment than some of the other motherboards we reviewed.

In fact, this cost will bite you in a couple ways. First, this is the second most expensive motherboard on our list, though it is far closer to the less expensive motherboards we reviewed than the most expensive ones. Still, the second cost of components may cause a bit of concern as well.

Desired Socket

Specifically, this motherboard will only accept the LGA1151 socket processor. This means you will not be able to save money using a less expensive CPU light you can with some other motherboards.

Considering the CPU does not need to be as impressive as for a gaming rig, this is a bit of a disappointment. Beyond the CPU requirement, this motherboard will also require DDR4 RAM. While this is not as bad as requiring DDR5 RAM, it will still be more expensive than the motherboards which can accept DDR3 RAM.

When it comes to building a mining rig, it’s often ultimately comes down to investing now or paying later. Essentially, the best components are obviously going to cost more, but they will generally allow you to run the mining operation at a lower energy cost or in some form at greater efficiency.

When it comes to the ASUS B250, this may be the case, but it will require that you set the board up in a particular arrangement with specific components for that to be the case.

Big in Numbers

First off, this motherboard has by far the most number of PCI-E ports that we saw. At a technical total of 19, there is not another consumer grade motherboard with this kind of capacity you will have to actually purchase an industrial grade motherboard meant for a large warehouse mining operation to get one with more PCI-E slots.

That said, even with a vertical riser system, you will not be able to get all the board to recognize GPUs in all 19 PCI-S slots without using specialized mining GPUs made by ASUS.

This is a bit anti-consumer in that it ultimately forces you to purchase exclusively within the ASUS brand lineup if you truly want to get the most out of your board. That said, even if you do not opt for the special ASUS brand GPUs, you can still easily get 12 GPUs assuming they are a singular make and model to run without too terribly much difficulty. This is due in a large part to the fact that the ASUS B250 comes preinstalled with a mining BIOS.

Rather than have to either update the BIOS with a specific mining driver like for some motherboards or even simply switch the BIOS setting from standard to mining, the ASUS B250 is shipped with the expectation that you will be using the motherboard for mining and the stock BIOS setup reflects that.
